KS4 students follow the AQA GCSE syllabus which aims to develop skills such as critical thinking, decision making and collaborative working.
The subject content includes the themes:
Community action and active citizenship;
Being a citizen in the UK: democracy and identity;
Fairness and justice;
and, Global issues and making a difference.
The themed approach and subject content challenges student s to consider concepts such as stereotyping, sustainable development and community cohesion and through these, to develop citizenship skills such as tolerance and negotiation.
This syllabus has obvious links to the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. It also complements the school’s approach to SMSC.
The GCSE syllabus builds on the work that students encounter in KS3 PSE lessons, assemblies and tutorial sessions.
