Medical Outreach Provision
As part of our service Sunbeck (Hambleton & Richmonshire Pupil Referral Service) regularly support students who are struggling to attend school due to a diagnosed medical condition. This involves teaching students in their own communities including homes, libraries and other venues linked to schools. The purpose of our work is to enable students to return to school as soon as possible and continue working towards their targets.
Students who need outreach tuition are referred by their school to the Collaborative Panel, who then request support from Sunbeck. In all cases, a home visit is made to discuss with the student and their parents/carers what the tuition package will include and to clarify the current health status of the student and the associated impact on their ability to learn.
Parents are given contact numbers and the name of the Lead Tutor, who will be the link with the school and home. Tuition focuses on the Core curriculum – English, Maths and Science but tutors will give advice and support so that students are able to organise their learning of other subjects that they may be following. It is the school's responsibility to provide work for students who are unable to attend. Tutors liaise closely with a named person in the school to ensure this happens smoothly.
Parents/carers and the student are invited to a review meeting with the school early into the tuition to monitor progress and discuss a plan for a return to school where appropriate. In some cases students may need a phased return back to school which usually involves a part time timetable in school supported with outreach tuition. The majority of students return to school within a 6 week period with many only requiring 2 - 3 weeks tuition from our service. In cases where the student’s medical condition requires provision over a longer term the service will work with the school and other agencies, including health, in-order to plan for the student’s educational needs and to ensure that they return to school as soon as their medical condition permits.
Sunbeck staff really enjoy delivering home tuition to Outreach students and would like to thank parents and carers for their continued support which ensures that their child is able to continue with their education and achieve their targets.
What the parent say:
"You have done extremely well, my daughter is now back in school and I hope other families progress as well as we have with your help."
"We found the initial chat about H's needs really helpful, so the tuition could be tailored to her preferences"
" We were happy with all of it!"
