Humanities and Citizenship Outings
September, 2022 – July, 2023
Easby Abbey
Mount Grace Priory
History walk – Utilizing the very local history & heritage within a five and ten minute walk – Bishop’s Palace, Castle, Grammar School, Porch House etc.
Northallerton Heritage Hub – We’re making a relationship with the hub, and hope to collaborate on a History of Schools type project.
The County Records Office – Guided tour of the archives and opportunities to look at maps and other source materials.
Northallerton Library – We make regular trips to the library, where we interact with library staff, select books to borrow and carry out research.
County Hall – We have made two trips to County Hall – one with Y10 Citizenship, one with Y11 Citizenship. We met the Head of the Chamber, had a tour and had the opportunity to ask questions and use the communication and speaker system in the chamber.
Bedale Harbour – KS3 Humanities – we have explored the walk by Bedale Beck, studied the old harbor and weir, looked at the Leech House and talked to members of the public appropriately.
Rye-Vitalise Project at Duncombe Park and Helmsley Castle – KS3 and KS4 cross curricular history, geography, citizenship and science trip.
KS4 - At KS4, where required, we have the expertise to support students who wish to continue their History or Geography GCSE course from their previous school, although this is not part of the standard, timetabled offer.
Statement of Intent ASDAN Humanities –
Our Humanities ASDAN short course will help the young people here at HRPRS develop their history, geography and interpretation skills. Our course offers a wide choice of history and geography themed activities and challenges, across a range of platforms, making good use of the resources we have around us in the town of Northallerton and on the internet.
The flexibility of our ASDAN's Humanities course means it can be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit our young people. It is possible for our students to take their collated ASDAN points with them to their next school. We interpret the challenge descriptions and adapt them according to our unique situation here at the HRPRS.
Our ASDAN Humanities course works on a multi-level, the focus being on completing challenges and on skills development according to individual ability. Our group sizes here at the HRPRS are small, so ASDAN works well in these smaller and more informal settings.
Throughout our ASDAN course we regularly explore the local historical and geographical environment, making good use of such places as County Hall, The County Records Office, The Library and the Heritage Hub. We have cultivated good connections with local volunteer-led groups, library staff and NYCC staff.
Learners must present evidence of their activities in an organised portfolio – at HRPRS we record our research digitally in student folders. Students’ digital folders will have -
-
a record of challenges completed, with supporting evidence for each challenge
-
recording documents, showing how learners have planned and reviewed their activities
-
summary of achievement, highlighting skills development
-
a final personal statement
We use a variety of evidence to record our challenge outcomes –
A diary or log
Academic work
Witness statements
Surveys
Photos
Letters or emails
Diagrams
Notes
Powerpoint presentations
Charts
Each learner will tackle the ASDAN Humanities course at their own pace and at their own level.
