At Sunbeck we recognise that reading is paramount to every pupil’s learning journey as it is the key that is needed to unlock the curriculum. Due to this, we have made it a fundamental part of our day, with every pupil getting daily reading sessions. We use Reading Solutions which is an adaptive, online reading development programme - the aim of which is to accelerate pupil reading abilities, develop vocabulary, improve comprehension and increase fluency.

All pupils’ reading is assessed on entry and we identify gaps in their phonetic knowledge. We use the Fresh Start programme, which is a phonics intervention programme that is proven to accelerate reading in secondary schools, unlocking the whole curriculum.
